About Us

Our Story

Stissing Environmental is a small, owner-operated environmental consulting company based in the historic hamlet of Bangall, Dutchess County. We help clients create and maintain healthy, resilient landscapes, orchards, working lands, and natural environments. Founded by Michael and Natalie O’Malley, the company draws on more than two decades of combined hands-on experience in land stewardship, ecological management, plant health care, research, and education.

Michael holds a degree in Environmental Conservation and Sustainability from the University of New Hampshire and brings extensive expertise in hybrid organic/conventional and fully organic plant health care. His experience includes invasive plant management, wildlife and pollinator habitat restoration, wetland and soil science, NYSDEC and US Army Corps wetland delineations, water-quality monitoring, conservation easement oversight, nutrient management, erosion control, native plantings, soil amendments, rare-plant surveys, GIS mapping, and natural resource inventories. Michael has also analyzed historical land-use changes from aerial imagery, collaborated with local land conservancies on GIS projects, participated in long-term surface water quality studies, and led large-scale habitat restoration efforts with local, state, and federal partners.  Michael is certified as a NYS Commercial Pesticide Applicator (C3911034), CT Pesticide Supervisor and Arborist (PMCS.0066060), and International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist (NY-267564A).

Natalie brings expertise in plant biology, ecological research, and hands-on land stewardship. She holds a Master’s degree in Plant Biology and a Bachelor’s in Marine Biology from the University of New Hampshire and has extensive experience studying native and invasive plants, ecological change, and land management in the Hudson Valley. Natalie has coordinated long-term environmental monitoring and citizen science programs, taught biology at the college level, and contributed to numerous ecological datasets and publications. Her work as a fine gardener adds practical experience in plant care, landscape design, and seasonal maintenance, combining science and hands-on stewardship to support healthy, resilient landscapes.

Our approach emphasizes long-term ecosystem health, clear communication, regulatory compliance, and thoughtful stewardship. We start by listening to client concerns and evaluating site conditions, inventorying existing resources, and establishing clear, practical goals. We provide multiple management options—including lower-cost alternatives—so clients can make informed decisions. All work is carried out with respect for the land, followed by planned monitoring as needed to ensure lasting results.

At Stissing Environmental, we combine scientific expertise with practical experience to deliver thoughtful, effective solutions tailored to each client and property.
